Anotace
The present publication is concerned with reading literacy and the development of reading literacy in primary schools. It presents a survey of research on the subject and a detailed overview of international studies aimed at measuring and assessing reading literacy. With respect to reading literacy, we shall be concerned with reading comprehension, the relationship between linguistic and cognitive processes as well as the development of metacognitive abilities amongst primary school students. The results of the PIRLS international study, which assesses reading literacy among early grade students, indicate that students, in general, score poorly in the comprehension of informational texts.
